How much work can you do?

Saturday, March 17th, 2007

This seems to be the story of my life at the moment! Everything is coming to a crux in the next couple of weeks so I’ve been rushed off my feet trying to get everything done.

At the moment, I’m working to a rather tight deadline at work, with all of the work that I’ve been doing for the last 5 months hopefully coming to fruition before the end of March. As well as work, I’m trying to fit in the work needed to be able to conduct the last pieces of research required for my PhD: we have been trying to get an empirical experiment completed by the end of term (essentially the end of March again!).

On top of all this, I am also moving house! My job requires me to relocate to Southampton, so I’ve managed to find a nice flat around 30 miles away in Bournemouth. Might be a long way, but I will also be spending time working in Bournemouth, so I’m hoping that the commutes will even out. I’m quite looking forward to moving even though it will mean that I’ll be moving away from Canterbury and all the people that I know here. I’ve been in Canterbury for eight years now, so it’s quite a big change.

I will still be coming back to Canterbury regularly though. Oddly enough, I will be back in Canterbury in May for a holiday! And I’m also involved in the ArtsFest on the 2nd June at the University. That will be my last musical event here - I passed on the baton as concert band librarian to young blood at the Music Society AGM last week. I’ve been on the Music Society committee for four years now!

Sadly being so busy means that I haven’t had the time nor the wherewithal to do some of the other things that I enjoy such as photography. The last photos that I uploaded to my website were back in August last year, and although I tried to find more time for photography with my one-a-day photoblog, that fell by the wayside as work and PhD commitments slowly started taking over my life.

Hopefully once the deadline at work is past and the empirical experiment for my PhD is completed I will have much more time to myself. I’m looking forward to getting out into the countryside around Bournemouth this summer. There are lots of nice places within easy reach such as Purbeck and the New Forest. And I will be living almost on the coast, so I can very easily just go for a walk along the seaside!

One slight disadvantage to all this work - I have now run out of food, so I need to squeeze time in for a trip to Sainsbury’s…
