New Photographs RSS Feed

Saturday, September 23rd, 2006

Just a small tweak on my photographs RSS feed, but now it shows all the new photographs added in the last two months rather than just the categories. I thought it was worth doing this seeing as I am now being more selective about which photographs I put on my photography website; previously I was showing new categories of photographs added in the last two months.

The Recently Added page on my photography website is still there and links to the categories rather than individual photographs.

Lunar Eclipse - photo

Thursday, September 7th, 2006

The UK wasn’t particularly well placed to see the lunar eclipse tonight, but being in the south east (and the sky being relatively cloud-free) meant that we had a reasonable view of a partial eclipse. I think it’s the first time that I’ve seen a proper “chunk” taken out of the moon!

This photo was taken with a Nikon D200 camera and Sigma 80-400mm lens:

Spitfire: Black 5, 4-6-0, No. 45231, ‘The Sherwood Forester’

Sunday, September 3rd, 2006

This weekend sees the regular Faversham Hop Festival taking place, celebrating Kent’s brewing heritage. Shepherd Neame, Britain’s oldest brewer, runs the event. One of the highlights is the running of a special steam train - The Spitfire - which plys its way over many of East Kent’s railways during the weekend.

My house backs on to the railway, so it’s a great chance to get photos of mainline steam train workings. The train running the Spitfire is a Black 5, 4-6-0, No. 45231, ‘The Sherwood Forester’. The photos below were taken from the Folly Farm crossing between Canterbury West and Sturry at about 7pm today as the train headed back towards Ashford. Click the pictures for a larger version.

Union Flag

Friday, May 19th, 2006

Union Flag The Union Flag was 400 years old on 12th April this year. Although Britain has technically never actually had an official flag, the Union Flag has been pretty much universally adopted as such. Oddly, there is also very little protection of the status of the flag, except when it is used as a jack on a ship at sea. The flag is also used as a canton (inset in the upper-left corner) for other national and regional flags around the world, particularly in Canada, Australia and New Zealand.

The flag is composed of the red cross of St. George representing England, the red saltire cross of St. Patrick representing Ireland and the saltire of St. Andrew representing Scotland. None of the flag actually represents Wales!

The photo was taken on a blustery day from on top of Dover Castle in Kent. I had to jam the camera against the battlements to keep it steady for the required shutter speed (around 1/30th of a second) to get the flag to blur.
